چکیده

THIS year marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Ernest Everett Just. He was one of the greatest biologists of the early 20th century, but being AfroAmerican, he never had a position that permitted full development of his research talent. The latter part of his life was a time of great frustration, for both professional and social reasons. Despite insufficient time for research and poor financial support, he published more than 70 articles and two books. I first heard of Just during my graduate student days. J. T. Patterson, my major professor at the University of Texas, had mentioned his work in a lecture. Later, in the fall of 1941, I joined the faculty at Dartmouth College and learned of Just’s death, which was on October 27. He had been a student there and my elderly colleague, John Gerould, remembered him well. I have been interested in him ever since, but I knew very little until the 1980s when I read Kenneth Manning’s magnificent biography (Manning 1983). That is the source of most of the material in this essay.

Belief in an unjust world: when beliefs in a just world fail.

Belief in a just world, where people get what they deserve, has been hypothesized to underlie a variety of psychological phenomena (Lerner, 1965). Close inspection of individual difference measures of this belief, however, has indicated repeatedly that just world beliefs are not a unidimensional construct.
